My Favorite Poems

"Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story."

                                     from Desiderata
                                            by Max Ehrmann

It has been said that reading a good poem can give you a vision that changes the way you see the world. Like music, poetry can help take you out of the world and refocus you. I became reacquainted with my love of poetry when I first returned to college several years ago. While I have many favorite poems, I had to say that Ehrmann's Desiderata and Henley's Invictus happen to be my two favorites. I first read Desiderata in an anthology of world poetry about a decade ago after I heard it mentioned in a news story. As for Invictus, I first read this poem in my 7th grade English class. Even after all these years, both of these poems still strike a cord with me regarding the creeds of life, determination, and perseverance.

The unique stories of these poems as well as the poems themselves are provided below. To enjoy you
