Tips To Creating Your "Bucket List"

Creating your dream "to-do-list" can be a fun and reflective task that is not at all difficult to construct. You probably should set aside at least a couple of hours to reflect and write your list on the first draft. As we move through the motions of life so will the list since this is a document that will change many times over your lifetime. It goes without saying that our goals change with the years and as you accomplish more on your list, you may be inspired to achieve even more. The list can be as long (or as short) as you want it to be. When preparing your list, you may want to keep these few tips in mind:

First, you might want to have several pieces of blank paper on hand where you can organize your list into categories. Try making your list by allowing one category per piece of paper. Suggested categories for your bucket list might include things such as travel, family, financial, career, random things, etc.

Next, start asking yourself questions in regards to each section. Where would you like to go before you “kick the bucket?” What would you like to accomplish in your career? Do you want a family? What do you want to do for your family? Do you want to save for a house? Have a million dollars saved for retirement? Use the “random things” section for items that don’t fall into the other sections (example, “watch all of the movies on AFI’s Top 100 Movies list”).

Lastly, as you go through your list days after making the first draft, you might find yourself thinking of additional things that you want to add to your list. Make sure goals and desires aren’t repeated in more than one category and that your list is organized. Accomplishing your goals on a bucket list can be difficult if it is not organized - especially if you have a total of 50, 100, or more items.

To ensure further organization for your list, you might want to make a binder or notebook to house it in. For those of you who are environmentally friendly and want to save paper, you can always create your list on a computer using such programs as Word or Publisher. You can also create your list with the help of online websites such as Superviva.
